Configuration

What configurations of casters are there?

  • Swivel – allows for 360 degree movement.
  • Rigid - allows for linear movement.

44

Diameter

Dimension

The diameter of a caster wheel from edge to edge.

Non-Marking

Performance

If casters are non-marking, they won’t leave any traces as they pass over a surface.

Wheel Material

Performance

What are different wheel material options for casters?

  • Iron - rolls easily on clean floors, abrasion-resistant, and prone to rusting.
  • Nylon – rolls smoothly on most floors and is flat spot resistant.
  • Plastic – rolls smoothly on most floors (including uneven surfaces), is flat spot resistant, non floor-marking, non-conductive, and typically offers floor protection.
  • Polyurethane – rolls smoothly and quietly on most floors (including uneven surfaces), skid-resistant, and non floor-marking.
  • Rubber – rolls smoothly on most floors, absorbs shocks to protect equipment, but may leave marks as they pass over floors.
  • Steel – offer excellent strength and shock absorption for loads too great for typical wheels and when floor protection doesn’t matter. Typically unbreakable and resistant to high temperatures.

What wheel types are there?

  • Solid - solid wheel made from a single material.
  • Tread On Core - core with a plastic tread wrapped around it.

What are casters? What is a caster on a dolly?

Casters are wheels that can be attached to the bottom of larger platforms (e.g., dollies) to enable them to be moved.

What is the difference between a wheel and a caster?

Wheels spin on a single axis while casters have complex mounting systems with the ability to be fixed or swivel on their own axis.

What are caster wheels used for?

Casters are used to support and make otherwise stationary platforms mobile (e.g., dollies, racks, carts, etc.).
